Breast and prostate cancer patients can reduce risk of dying from cancer by up to 40%.

A study has claimed people with the two most common types of cancer can cut their risk of dying by up to 40% - simply by walking a mile every day.

Research carried out by Macmillan Cancer Support claims walking for a mile (1.6 km) at a moderate pace of up to three miles per hour, or walking for around 20 minutes a day could reduce breast cancer patients' risk of dying by around 40% and those with prostate cancer by 30%.

The estimates are based on 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity a week. This means walking must be 'brisk' and at a speed of three miles per hour or faster.

"For cancer patients, physical activity can not only reduce the risk of dying or the cancer coming back, but can also help to manage some of the devastating side-effects of treatment, such as swelling, fatigue or anxiety," said Ciaran Devine, Macmillan's chief executive.

"We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to what is a very simple and obvious solution. Physical activity is a wonder drug."

The research by Walking for Health, a network of walking groups run by Macmillan Cancer Support and The Ramblers, a UK-based walking charity, found physical exercise can also reduce some of the side effects of cancer, such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, impaired mobility and fluctuating weight.

Research conducted in France released earlier this month found that postmenopausal women - the group in which breast cancer is most common - who had walked or cycled for four hours a week over the previous four years, were at a lower risk of being diagnosed with the disease compared with women who lived a more sedentary lifestyle.
